Absolutely one the finest hotels along the entire Andaman coastline. Bordering on luxurious, but better, as it feels so absolutely relaxed and natural. Virtually deserted white sandy beach is a wonder for swimmers and children alike, with crystal clear / clean waters and large rock pool areas. These rock pools are loved by children, and are just out of "earshot", but well within view of the sun-lounger area. Its as if nature and the hotel management conspired to give the kids and the adults what they both want from a holiday. Located well away from other hotels and the main road / inhabited areas, this hotel positively bristles with tranquility and clean sea air.
The restaurant serves the best Thai cuisine for miles, and has a particularly well deserved reputation for its seafood dishes (the green seafood curry is particularly good, even great). "Watching the world go by" takes on a completely new meaning at Similana. The pool and adjacent beach area are absolutely serene places to catch the rays and the breeze. Although plenty of tree shade is there and so are the waiting staff ready to serve you your favourite "tipple" and add fuel to the question "Why do I have to go back home?!" The main hotel area, with it's superb open air, tree-house bar. Is linked to the beach and pool (and tree-houses) below by a wonderful wooden staircase (less romantic, yet more solid steps also exist). When you consider it's remote location, you will be impressed and astounded by the high natural quality of the rooms. Carries this site's highest recommendations. But, be warned, this hotel is justly, often fully booked. So, make that reservation early, and be prepared to change your holiday dates if your first preference is not available - It really is that good.
Mark's Tip
If you are a little frail, it is best to book into either the duplex, or the deluxe bungalow rooms, as they are basically on the same level as the main hotel facilities. Although the pool, massage area, beach and tree-house grounds are down the steps, there is plenty to occupy your attention on the hillside / hotel level. Including a wonderful summer house "bale" which sits right above the ocean.
